The following is a cross-post written by Erica Martin, VP of Communications for our incredible partner, IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare). You can learn more about Erica here and your can learn more about IFAW’s work here.

As a media communications person my phone is never too far from my reach. And it gets stuffed into pockets, bags and backpacks as needed depending on whether I am having a meeting in a boardroom or lucky enough to be out in the field at one of the International Fund for Animal Welfare’s projects.

So imagine my delight when we got contacted by Reveal—makers of very cool, environmentally friendly iPhone covers—who wanted to develop a range especially for IFAW.

iphone_coversThe initial designs highlight four of our priority campaigns—protecting the world’s elephants; saving seals from the cruel and unsustainable Canadian commercial seal hunt; making oceans a safer place for whales; and caring for cats and dogs.

The funky designs look great and will help us in our ongoing fight to rescue and protect animals around the world, with part proceeds from every cover sold going towards our work.

I am currently sporting the seal cover since the seal hunt opened this month and thousands of seals are losing their lives right now for products nobody wants or needs.

I hope you will check out the Reveal IFAW pageand show your support to friends with a stylish statement on your iPhone!

Let us know which one you prefer!

After hours spent pouring over destination guides, reading forums and getting insider information from friends who have gone before you, you’ve finally gone and done it. That vacation of a lifetime, the one you have been dreaming about and planning for months – possibly even years – is booked, paid for and there’s a plane e-ticket with your name on it winging its way to your inbox through the internet ether.

Who first inspired you to hit the road?

For many, foreign travel, getting used to a new climate, food, currency and local language can be daunting. But those feelings are mixed with a heavy dose of excitement as you ponder over the new experiences you’re about to embrace.

Travel helps to broaden your mind, but what you may not realize is: your boldness to face the unknown and venture into a different part of the world helps encourage a sense of adventure in others, some of whom may not even own a passport, let alone have plans for a whirlwind tour of Europe, Asia, Africa or South America.

In today’s connected world where we share our lives through social media and mobile gadgets, when you take an adventurous trip, you give others the ability to see and feel what you experience like never before with photos, stories and videos uploaded in real time with just a few clicks of a button.  Your decision to go on a new adventure inspires others to follow in your footsteps.

Nothing changes the way you see the world quite like travel does

One of the most enduring and life changing things about international travel is how you are affected by the experiences, people and places you encounter whilst on the road. And no matter whether you travel with family, friends, or solo, you will want to find ways to preserve your memories and capture your journey so you can share it with others.

You also need the ability to stay in touch with loved ones so you can keep them up to date with where you are, what you’re doing and allow them to rest easy knowing you are safe. After all, you’re about to head off into the Thar desert for four days on a camel riding trip – where even the phone connection is sketchy, never mind the internet! And let’s not forget all those incredible people you will undoubtedly meet on your journey – you have to find a way to stay in touch with them. It’s a lot of fun to have friends who live all over the world.

Hi tech, low tech, no tech: How has technology changed the way we travel

These days, the modern foreign traveler’s luggage consists of much more than a few changes of clothes, a camera and a hardback book for the poolside. It’s not unusual to travel with a tablet and smartphone, not to mention earphones, portable speakers or an e-reader – the essential travel kit for those who like to stay connected while they’re on the move.

paris

For many the discovery that your guest house has no wifi and only an archaic dusty old Dell desktop in the lobby for shared use – can bring on a case of hives, or at the least a very real sense of panic. Our connected generation has come to expect access to the internet everywhere we go. We use platforms like Facebook and Twitter to share real-time updates, images and footage – and whilst our travel ‘instagrams’ no doubt inspire envious  ‘likes’ from friends and loved ones, they also let loved ones know that, wherever we are, we’re ok.

Stay in touch, share the world through your eyes and inspire others

Occasionally you may find your wanderlust takes you to a destination where 24-hour instant access to the internet is but a distant memory. And you can’t share pictures of that amazing sunset you experienced last night or the huge fish you caught for dinner, with the click of a button.

Here are three simple, creative and low-cost ways you can curate your travel experiences and maybe even inspire others to see the world.  And the best thing is, all of these ways to document your trip can be done both online and off, so you’ll never have to lose another moment.

  • Start a blog

Starting a blog is the most obvious choice as it allows you to share as much or as little text and/or images about your trip as you want. The good thing about blogging is that it doesn’t require you to have immediate access to the internet. You can write your blog post when it’s still fresh in your mind and save it in a text document. The next time you hit a wifi spot you can upload your story and get on with creating more experiences to share.

  • Record a second of footage a day or of each location

You don’t need to have wifi in order to use the video setting on most smart phones. Take a second to capture a snippet of footage from each day. After the trip, pull this footage into a 60 second montage which features one second of each day, each location or country.  This takes a little more commitment, but the memoir you create for yourself and the experiences you can share with the people who matter to you, make it worth it.  Check out this inspiring example of a 60 second montage of an incredible global backpacking trip filmed by STA Travel.

  • Create an audio diary

Most smart phones have some kind of audio memo feature. You can use this feature with or without the internet to record your journal, thoughts and ideas, or even personal audio messages that you can send when you have internet connection again. This low tech form of journaling is great for recording interesting details about the places and people you experience. You can then either upload these audio files to an mp3 sharing platform like Soundcloud and share them publicly, or keep them as a personal record of your journey.

If you travel regularly, you may not realize that you are an inspiration to those at home, on the ground, who have yet to scratch their travel itch. That picture of you walking down the beach against the backdrop of a breath taking sunset. Or, that tiny snippet of video you captured of a colorful local festival – can inspire someone who has been sitting on the fence reluctant to do anything about accomplishing their travel dreams, to finally do something about it.

International Fund for Animal Welfare

International Fund for Animal Welfare

International Fund for Animal Welfare

Over 40 years ago, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) began as a small group of citizens coming together to stop the killing of endangered baby seals for their skins to be sold to make luxury products.

Since then IFAW – which currently operates in 40 countries – has grown into the most effective international organization specializing in saving animals in crisis around the world.  They fight against some of the cruelest hunting practices, such as ivory poaching and commercial whaling, but also provide much needed medical care for dogs and cats in disadvantaged communities around the world.

For every product sold in the IFAW Collection, REVEAL donates a portion of the proceeds to IFAW´s mission to protect animals in crisis worldwide.  To find out more about IFAW, visit their website at http://www.ifaw.org

American Forests

Founded in 1875, American Forests is the oldest national nonprofit conservation organization in the United States and has been at the forefront of the conservation movement ever since.

American Forests has helped to establish institutions we take for granted today, such as the U.S. Forest Service and the national forest and national park systems and contributed to literally thousands of forest ecosystem restoration projects in America and worldwide. In the last 2 decades, American Forests has planted over 40 million trees in forests throughout the U.S. and beyond – and aims to reach total of 100 million trees planted by 2020.

REVEAL supports American Forests with every item sold from their Nature Tech Collection, a range of tech accessories made of natural and renewable cork or bamboo.  For more information about American Forests and their great work, please visit http://www.americanforests.org

Homeboy Industries

Homeboy Industries

Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2013, Homeboy Industries is the largest gang intervention, rehab and re-entry program in the United States. By offering hope, training and job skills, they help former gang-involved youth to redirect their lives and become contributing members of their families and communities.

Homeboy Industries, started by Father Greg Boyle in East Los Angeles in 1988, was a response to the need for employment opportunities among at-risk youth. Today, Homeboy is located in gang-neutral downtown Los Angeles, providing job training in 8 social enterprises (a bakery, a grocery and several others), life skill classes as well as legal, clinical and mental health services. The many jobs offered by Homeboy Industries give their clients confidence and self-esteem, while enabling them to provide for their families.

REVEAL is partnering with Homeboy to provide a new social enterprise, designing and developing a line of tech and music accessories inspired by talented Homeboy and Homegirl artists, doing exactly what the organization stands for – reintegrating youth back into the community, providing them with jobs and skills, as well as the hope they need to succeed.  For more information about Homeboy, please visit their website at http://www.homeboyindustries.org

How could it be possible that REVEAL’s Luxury Mobile Collection is made of recycled plastic bottles?  Well, let’s take a look at the journey of the bottles that ended up in your sleek REVEAL tablet or smartphone case!

Our tech accessories are made of recycled plastic bottles

Our tech accessories are made of recycled plastic bottles

  • It all starts with conscious individuals throwing away plastic bottles in the proper recycling bin.
  • Plastic bottles are collected and ground down into tiny plastic chips.
  • Plastic chips are melted and extruded into yarn.
  • This recycled yarn is used by our fabric manufacturer to make gorgeous recycled satin, microsuede and polyester.
  • We use these luxurious fabrics to make our must-have tech accessories of the season –  like the Elena iPad Folio or the Cassi Smartphone Cross-body Bag!

Reveal Tech Fashion

Why do we go the extra mile with our sustainable design and manufacturing?

Because we are all about challenging the status quo of fashion and showing what is possible when you have a passion for innovation and a different way of thinking.  And we love the idea of diverting waste from landfills, then making it into something beautiful and useful.  And it all takes less energy compared to making everything from virgin materials!

And to top it off, our recycled fabrics are certified by Scientific Certification Systems, a global leader in third-party environmental certification, auditing and testing.  For more information on SCS, please visit their website athttp://www.scscertified.com

Be the difference

Albert Einstein once said : It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity”. Like him, there are some who think that technology is  dehumanizing our society,  but like everything in life,  that all depends on the  way we use it. These eight ecological, fair trade and socially responsible applications are a proof that technology can: contribute to improving our energy consumption habits and make us better aware of the origin of the products we buy and the impact our consumption has on the environment.

REVEAL is engaged in linking technology, glamour and sustainability by striving to create beautiful earth and animal friendly products. When you buy a REVEAL handbag, wallet, laptop bag, or and iPhone accessories not only do you get one of the hottest tech accessories on the market but you also do you part help maintain our planet.

Win – win, right!

PS: Let us know your favorites in the comments!

Imagine the scene: you’ve just chosen your new REVEAL cork kindle cover, and in that very moment, a tree starts growing right next to you. Sitting in front of your laptop, you confirm the item in your shopping cart, you click the “buy” button and instantly hear the sound of a small oak tree popping out of the ground. Your friend sat across the coffee table falls in love too (with a bamboo iPad case) , and – “pop!”- another tree (a pine perhaps), starts unfolding its tiny green branches in the crack of your floor.

Popping through the parquet…well, not quite!

Whilst a pine tree obviously won´t shoot right from your parquet -, this is not far from what REVEAL´s rePlant Program is all about. In partnership with American Forests, REVEAL plants a tree for every product you buy from their Nature Tech Collection. This means anytime you purchase a tech accessory from REVEAL – an iPhone shell, a Kindle folio or a pair of sunglasses, all made with bamboo, cork and wood –, you´ll actually plant a tree in one of the many endangered forests worldwide.

The partnership was a strategic choice: American Forests is the organization when it comes to protecting and restoring forests.  Founded in 1875, the oldest national nonprofit conservation organization in the United States has been at the forefront of the conservation movement ever since. It has helped to establish institutions we take for granted today, such as the U.S. Forest Service and the national forest and national park systems, has provided public education on responsible forest stewardship and contributed to literally thousands of forest ecosystem restoration projects.

REVEAL replant programme

40 million trees – and counting

Since 1990, American Forests has planted nearly 40 million trees in forests throughout the U.S. and beyond, resulting in cleaner air and drinking water, restored habitat for wildlife and fish, and the removal of millions of tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. With the impressive goal of planting a total of 100 million trees by 2020, American Forests is certainly not resting on their laurels. Through their extensive corporate partnerships with companies such as REVEAL, they make sure that any responsible consumer gets the chance to contribute to the birth of a beautiful forest somewhere in the world.

It’s not rocket science!

But how does this even work – how does a click on a bamboo iPad case transform into an actual tree? The process is really simple. As co-founder Jiaying Wei explains, REVEAL reports the number of Nature Tech products sold quarterly to American Forests and consequently donates a portion of the proceeds for each item; as soon as the donation check arrives, American Forests starts planting the trees.

(In case you wondered: planting a tree with your purchase from REVEAL really makes a difference. On average, one mature tree produces nearly 260 pounds of oxygen each year, and can provide enough oxygen for two people. This means that RePlant currently provides for the yearly oxygen consumption of a smaller town!)

Most of the trees sponsored by the rePlant Program are planted in the United States, in projects such as the Cape Chiniak Reforestation Effort, the Mountain Communities Wildfire ReLeaf or the Los Padres Conifer Forest Restoration, to name just a few. However, despite its name, the work of American Forests stretches well beyond U.S. borders. To date, more than 38 foreign countries from four continents have seen American Forests´ staff planting trees on their soil. The Reforestation of the Atlantic Forest after a Tornado in Argentina, the Sumatran Orangutan Society Reforestation Project in Indonesia or the Native Tree Reforestation in the East African Highlands in Kenya are just a few examples of the worldwide impact of American Forests. For the full list of countries, visit their website here.

In the past years diversity has become a buzz word in polite and educated circles; a synonym for originality and sustainability – pushing you to put aside conventional-ism, and find new things. But when it comes to textiles, diversity has become more a necessity than a trend. Since the industrial revolution the demand for fabric has only grown and some sources, such as cotton or cashmere, are now so over exploited  that their current production levels cannot continue without severe  implications.

So what is the answer?

REVEAL are not the only brand turning to the earth to find solutions that are not only sustainable, but highly desirable. More and more designers are deciding to deferentiate themselves and help sustain the plant by only working with vegetal fabrics. The old belief that  ecofashion is itchy, frumpy, and only for friend of earth supporters has been challenged, and designers are working hard to make sure their work is fashion forward as well as socially conscious.

Plant the seed of the future.

When you think of corn, soy or bamboo your first thought is rarely of fashion?  But these natural resources all make great textile alternatives that can be used diversely, creatively, and without the premium price tag you might expect to find on such innovative materials.

Let’s take a look at them in more detail.

Hemp:

It is a fiber similar to linen. It has an extraordinary resistance to humidity and change of climate, that is why originally it was used in the production of nautical textiles. Hemp material traditionally has a lot of character and is extremely soft to the touch.

Bamboo:

bamboo material

The bamboo plant is the fastest growing plant in the world and it can grow in many different regions, which is great for diversified production. Growing bamboo doesn’t require artificial irrigation (it uses the rainfall to feed itself) neither pesticides, due to its antibacterial properties. When working with Bamboo, your biggest limitation will be your imagination.Take a look at REVEAL‘s bamboo collection and you can see you a small sample of what can be achieved.

Soy:

Thinking of soy plants rarely leads to thoughts of underwear, yet soy fabrics are often referred to as soy silk due to their soft texture, and are widely used in the manufacturing of underwear. Soy fibers are extracted from the hulls of the soybean, and are usually a food manufacturing waste product. However, this does not stop you being able to produce a very feminine and sensuous fabric you really want to wear close to your skin.

Ingeo™

This is one of the most innovative textile fibers of the moment.Who said synthetic is synonymous with pollution? Ingeo is a synthetic corn based fiber made from 100% renewable sources and therefore biodegradable. Ingeo fabrics are light when mixed with other fibers and very resistant.

Coconut :

The big unknown, better associated with the Caribbean and other tropical locales, it is hard to think of the coconut as a textile source –   but it is. Coir fiber is material obtained from the coarse outer shell of the coconut and when processed and woven, makes an extremely durable material. South east Asian fishermen have been making fishing ropes from coir for centuries. Coconut fabrics are light, machine washable, comfortable and very quick to dry – a dream fiber for sports clothing!

At REVEAL we use Bamboo, post consumer recycled water bottles, cork and linen among other things, to produce our stylish, ecofriendly, yet highly fashionable tech accessories. It just goes to show: ecofriendly fashion is not just for the tree hugger – it’s for everyone!

What vegetal fabrics do you love?

Doc Hendley (Image Source)

Doc Hendley (Image Source)

Doc Hendley is the Founder and President of Wine To Water, a non-profit aid organization focused on providing clean water to needy people around the world. In 2003 he dreamed up the concept of the organization while bartending and playing music in nightclubs around Raleigh, North Carolina. In February of 2004 the first fundraiser was held and by August of that same year Doc was living in Darfur, Sudan installing water systems for victims of the government supported genocide. When Doc returned home in August of 2005 the haunting memories of what he had seen in Darfur drove him to continue building the organization he started two years before. In 2007, after working two jobs and volunteering his time for over three years, Wine To Water became an official 501 (c) (3) and Doc’s dream finally became a reality. “When the idea came to me to start Wine To Water the only real world job experience I had was tending bar. I dreamed of building an organization that fought water related death and disease using completely different methods than anyone else.
